The organization has called for a modification of the law project said grenelle II, asking to introduce the concept of waste in the definition of pollution (sea amendment Article 60).
The legislative recognition of waste as pollution would significantly alter the context of our activities in terms of environmental protection. Surfrider is more and more offensive to obtain the classification of the waste as pollution and not only as nuisance.
This initiative is undertaking at European level with the European Commission. Surfrider is acting on an environmental directive to include the waste in the indicators of good water quality. The organization has been asked to take part in the meeting on the environmental strategies on the marine environment, is taking place in Brussels November 16th and 23rd. For us, it’s an opportunity to press for the setting up of the implementation of this new directive. Waste equally damages the good ecological status as “substances or energies” introduced by human activities.
Waste and water quality are part of our programs and campaign for almost 20 years. We often alerted European authorities on this subject (amendments, petitions, mails…). This strategy, undertaken at national and European level, is crucial for ours actions to defend and protect the environment.
