Surfrider Foundation is joining the many testimonies from Italian environmental protection associations in Italy following the spillage of nearly 1,000 cum of petrol into the Po River
This environmental disaster is threatening the entire region, its waterways and crops. Hundreds of animals, birds and ducks, are already dead having been suffocated by the foul-smelling petrol slick, which spans several kilometres. At this moment in time, the oil spill is inexorably moving downstream. Experts reckon that the slick will reach the mouth of Italy’s greatest river within the next five days. Marevivo, an organisation for the protection of the sea, predicts that ten thousand marine species could be affected when the spill reaches the Adriatic Sea. According to local experts, this disaster will have repercussions on the entire food chain.
The drama unfolded Tuesday, the 23rd at dawn, when the cisterns of the old Monza refinery in the Milanese region were opened. This would appear to have been a deliberate act. Over a 1,000 cum of fuel then spilled over into the Lambro basin, a tributary of the Po River.
Surfrider Foundation is extremely concerned with the consequences of this pollution and is following closely the progress of the oil slick which is about to hit the Parma region.
