The crew of Watch the Waste is finishing its tour of the North Atlantic after 8 months of navigation dedicated to the observation of the sea waste.
The ship started its trip last October from the Trinité-sur-Mer (Brittany), the sailors of Alcavelis went through 11000 miles, navigated 3 continents and visited 20 countries worldwide. Listening to the crew : "on the tiny part of the Atlantic Ocean visited by the boat, the association found to the position of 150 waste or agglomerate of floating waste. If we extrapolate this figure the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, the ocean would be soiled by about 40 millions of visible waste.”
After returning from their trip, the association proposes a tool (PODEM) for all navigators. They wish that every boat could be able to count and localize waste that they could see in the sea. This could be done in order to implement a Sea Waste Cartography.
Each person has to realize by himself that Sea Waste is a really big problem that concerns all of us.
Sponsored by Surfrider Foundation, the crew of Watch the waste is expected on June 12th at the port of the Trinity on sea.
