Surfrider Foundation Europe has always fought for having a better informed public regarding the quality of bathing water.

Extremely interested in the question of water quality, our association implemented campaigns following water quality in watersports zones along the basque coast between 2001 and 2005, and along the Mediterranean coast since 2007.

These allow Surfrider Foundation to carry out its analysis on water quality and to respond to the expectations of waterusers.

Laboratory Objectives

Objectives of the laboratories:

  • Follow all year long the bacteriological qualities of the water in watersports zones and bathing zones
  • Inform Surfrider's members, watersports enthusiants, the public at large, local concerned actors and groups regarding the quality of water in these zones
  • Emphasise contamination problems and take action for the improvement of  water quality
  • Create a sustainable information exchange between citizens, specialists of the coast, decision-makers and other local people in charge

We use the official analysis methods as set out in the directive.

Specifics

Thanks to its experience and know-how, Surfrider works with representative groups and local concerned actors in order to implement actions adapted for each particular situation.  Our association ignites and accelerates the consideration of environmental problems and pushes decision-makers to engage more quickly in their work in order to improve the state of the environment.

Our network of complementary notification allows for the rapid treatment of accidental contamination problems.  Although some problems are recurring, the synthesis of results obtained all year long allows us to define the points necessary to address the problem.  Sites showing concerning results are then the subject of a more in-depth study, and actions with institutions, groups and concerned communities are taken in order to improve water quality in these areas.
