Surfrider Foundation Europe has a long track record of advocating for an improvement in water quality information-sharing amongst coastal stakeholders.
Frequently consulted on questions regarding water quality, Surfrider has managed a water quality monitoring program for recreational waters of the Basque coast from 2001 to 2005 and 2008 to the present, and on the Mediterranean coast from 2007. In 2009, two new programs started up, one in the Midi-Pyrenees and the other on the coast of Britanny.
These programs allow Surfrider Foundation Europe to carry out legitimate analysis on water quality and to respond to the expectations of waterusers.
Objectives of the laboratories:
- Follow all year long the bacteriological qualities of the water in watersports zones and bathing zones
- Inform Surfrider's members, watersports enthusiants, the public at large, local concerned actors and groups regarding the quality of water in these zones
- Emphasise contamination problems and take action for the improvement of water quality
- Create a sustainable information exchange between citizens, specialists of the coast, decision-makers and other local people in charge
We use the official analysis methods as set out in the Directive.
