Overview of the situation

Surfrider Foundation Europe is concerned about the lack of authority held by international institutions and condemns the actions of « Criminals of the Sea ».

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), an agency of the United Nations, regulates and legally defines the usage of the seas and oceans. States are free to sign or disregard the the IMO's conventions and charters. Though states are pressured to adopt international norms, ship owners and other charters are not held accountable and have made no effort to limit their waste.

Evidently, Surfrider is not capable of stopping these offenders immediately but will utilize all existing legal tools to support efforts angainst pollution.
