The beach of Capocotta in Italy (near Rome) is in the lead for the time being. The final results will be announced on July 15th for a clean-up which will take place on July 23rd

Surfrider’s “Ocean Initiatives” and Corona’s “Save the Beach” initiative meet the same aim: to increase public awareness on macro-waste pollution threatening the beaches’ natural beauty.

For their first common action, Surfrider and Corona are inviting everyone to participate in the saving of one polluted beach. Members of Surfrider and Corona will supervise the whole operation by providing many fun educational tools to make this moment a great experience for all: kids, families*…anyone who wants to get involved!

To commit further in the environmental preservation, Corona has also decided to support Surfrider’s environmental program called Keepers of the Coast, by financing one of the endangered beaches’ cases by the end of 2010.

As soon as the results of the votes will be officially announced, you will find all the information on the selected beach on the Ocean Initiatives website

* Erratum: the clean-up is forbidden to persons under 18

A step seems to be made in Benin in the town of Grand Popo (Atlantic Coast of Benin). No sooner had he been elected than the new mayor of Grand Popo decided to draw the attention of the political and administrative authorities of the region on coastline pollution issues.

For this occasion, the Association for Youth Challenges for the Development (Association Défis Jeune pour le Développement) organized a large beach clean-up as part of Surfrider’s « Ocean Initiatives », on May 20th, 21st and 22nd in Kindjehoue and Gbecon (region of Grand Popo).

Both May 20th and 21st were dedicated to awareness-raising actions for school kids and the general public on coastline preservation. The clean-up strictly speaking, was on May 22nd: eight teams, each made of about 28 people, shared the cleaning of 8 areas.

The Benin Secretary for Environment and Nature Preservation, along with an important delegation of his cabinet, and the mayor of Grand Popo along with his town council joined the operation to bring their support and pitch in.

Quick summary of the clean-up

Quantity of collected waste: 1400m3

Number of filled rubbish bags: 40

Number of participants: 581 of which 356 school kids.

This action deserves to be rapidly and efficiently extended, so that other “Ocean Initiatives” can be organized in all the other coastal towns of Benin which are slowing to take measures regarding coastline pollution, measures that have been asked for a long time.

A look back on a snowflake that became a breaker

Weekend of April 24th to 26th, 2009. The Snowflake followed the watercourses to blend in with the waves, sweeping away with its tides, loads of well-motivated top French athletes.

The event was supposed to be a trek, and it was so. From the tough downhill conditions for skiing and snowboarding, to the generous waves (to say the least) at the final step in Anglet (Basque Coast, France).

Athletes who were making their debut struggled a bit, but kept their smile and everything remained in a friendly mood. The good spirit triggered some cheating from the teams, aiming at slowing their competitors down, however everything went within a great sportsmanship…

Surfrider Foundation followed the event with a stand in the “educational caravan”, along with Moutain Riders, l’Agence de l’Eau (Water Agency) and the French Surfing Federation. We will retain the success of this first edition which just set the foundations for next year’s rendez-vous.
