Gironde - Cap "Ferrailles"

Date de dépôt Sept-10

Pays : France - Département : gironde - Ville : Arcachon -

Objet

In the Arcachon Bay, thousands of tons of old metal poles ("ferrailles") have been left behind in the ocean by oyster farmers, and they represent a real danger to sailors. This metalwork was originally planted in the sand or sludge by the farmers but turn into a real danger once the parks are abandoned or if the boarders are badly maintained.

État des lieux

Thousands of tons of metal are believed to be submerged in the water. Surfrider supports the environmental fight, demanding that the boundaries are better maintained when the oysters are still being cultivated, and that they are removed once cultivation ceases. The Keeper has used geolocation to assess the location of the metal bars, and he keeps the authorities informed. A petition is being distributed throughout the Surfrider network and can be accessed online.
