Objet
This lagoon has been transformed into a sewer. Only a few districts of Mamoudzou are linked up to the only sewage treatment plant in Mayotte. At the origin of the serious silting up of the lagoon are the near absence of waste management on the island and the slash-and-burn cultivation practises leading to deforestation. The result is that bathing in the water brings with it a high risk of catching a nasty disease. Schoolchildren learn how to swim at these often contaminated beaches. Risking their lives, local fishermen have to travel 200 km from the coast in small motor boats because fishing resources are dwindling further every day.
État des lieux
Surfrider is supporting the Keeper who is fighting for a systematic surveillance of the water quality to make the general public and the local authorities aware of the severity of this threat.
