Côtes d'Armor - Shell sand extraction

Date de dépôt Février 2012

Pays : France - Département : Côtes d'Armor - Ville : Trébeurden -

Objet

The project consists of extracting 400,000 cubic metres of shell sand annually over a period of twenty years, i.e. total of 8 million cubic metres, from an underwater dune situated at the "Pointe de Lannion". This location is less than one kilometre from Natura 2000 sites, including that of the Sept-île Reserve, sanctuary  to marine birds. This project presents serious hazards for the environment but also for tourism, water sports, and fishing activities. The coveted site happens to be the preferred habitat of sand eels that numerous bird species feed on, which ould therefore be threatened by this project. Other species of fish are also likely to feel the consequences of the shell sand extractions.

État des lieux

The project was badly received by all of the local authorities neighbouring the site as well as the communes of the towns Lannion/Trégor. They are all supporting Lannion Bay to be entirely classified as a Natura 2000 site. In March 2012, Surfrider joined the action group "Le Peuple des Dunes en Trégor" (The People of the Tregor Dunes), which rallies more than 30 associations and organisations. All members defend their own objective, such as environmental protection, development of tourism or water sports, professional angler's or armateur yatchsmen committees etc, but they are all united in their desire to protect the maritime heritage of Trégor. The petition, which can be accessed online, has been sent out to the entire Surfrider community. In May 2012, following an appeal for citizen mobilisation, 4,000 people rallied on Tresmeur Beach to demonstrate against this project. Until the project is abandoned, mobilisation will not falter.
