Objet
Fore more than 35 years, the overflow duct at the La Salie Quay has been discharging water that is suspected to be contamined directly into the ocean, where bathing and fishing are prohibited but where surfers of all ages try and master the waves. Be it wastewater concentrated at the outlet or insufficiently treated industrial discharges, the local users of the coastline regularly observe the effects of this pollution on their beaches, which includes black water, brown foam, and nauseating smells.
État des lieux
To protest against these discharges, Surfrider has allocated Black Flags to the southern beach of La Salie on several occasions. Since its creation in 2001, our association has been supporting the "Comité de Vigilance" (Vigilance Committee), which unites local politicians from the town of Biscarosse, and other associations including ADREMA, Le POULP and Bisca-Surf-Biscarosse. Actions led by the ccommittee in the past have resulted in the construction of two sewage treatments plants; however this did not resolve all the issues. Both the committee and Surfrider are still fighting against this pollution by organising numerous demonstrations and annual days of conferences and debates in order to inform the users of the coastline, and to raise their awareness. Surfrider also participated in the writing of a plea for "a clean ocean" and met with the competent authorities to demand for stricter standards to be introduced. More recently, our association reaffirmed its position by co-signing "The Biscarosse Appeal" of the Aquitaine Region protester's group, and by sending it to all its supporters with a renewed appeal for mobilisation. On the 14th of April 2012, the members of the Aquitaine Region Protest Group Against Dumping at Sea appealed for the mobilisation of knowledge, the distribution of information and the promotion of actions that work towards limiting the impact of anthropological activities on the marine environment, with a view to protect the coastal and marine zones of this region fast and effectively.
