Pyrénées-Atlantiques - Bio Filters

Objet

Since 2009, we have been finding little plastic wheels along the Atlantic Coast, which prompted a new Keeper of the Coast battle to be started by Surfrider Basque Coast Chapter in 2010. The Keepers of the Coast network intervenes across Europe, and all Surfrider chapters communicate with each other and share their knowledge. It is thanks to the Surfrider Corsica Chapter that we found out more about these bio filters, which are used in sewage treatment plants to purify the water.

État des lieux

Whilst we managed to identify them and discover their provenance, we still have to understand why these plastic wheels end up as litter on river shores and ocean beaches. We used to find them mainly in Biarritz and Hendaye, in the southern Landes Region and northern Spain, but they have inscreasingly started to appear on the Mediterrannean coast. We currently have two possible hypotheses on why these bio filters are found far from their source, it may be a case of isolated incidents due to overflowing after heavy rain falls, or accidental losses when they are released into the water, or when works are being carried out at the sewage station. The battle is still ongoing and we ask everyone who comes accross bio filters to contact the Surfrider Basque Coast Chapter.
