Objet

To protect the coastline and the shores from erosion, the aim of the Sand Engine (or Sand Motor) project was to deposit large quantities of sand along the Dutch coast, forming an artificial hook-shaped peninsula. Over time, the sand will erode and wash up along the coast due to the natural movement of the currents, waves and tides. Surfrider sided with the local surfing community who want to prevent potential negative impacts on the waves.

État des lieux

The Keeper and the Surfrider Foundation Holland Chapter teamed up with Holland Surfing, within the group 'Surf Interest' with the aim of getting involved in the project. The idea is to optimise the planned sand bank and avoid it having negative repercussions on the quality of the waves at the site. Surf Interest has been able to participate in the different phases of the consultation process and has presented itself as a major partner in the talks with the government and political actors involved on this project. This has allowed for the interests of surfers and surf schools to be integrated in measures planned for the future, including the development of the Sand Engine.

The work carried out by the Keeper and the Dutch chapter allowed for the formation of new waves and for the preservation of the already existing ones. Today, the area is open to coastline users and surfing is officially recognised at the site of the Sand Engine. The Dutch chapter remains mobilised to guarantee access to the area for the long term.
