When it rains, sewage water runs directly into the natural gully that flows into the ocean a few meters further along, and straight into an area popular with surfers not far from a bathing zone. The sewage treatment plants on Réunion Island are outdated and not always up to the job.

The Keeper alerted the town council to initiate a control of the treatment plants’ conditions, so that repair can be carried out where necessary. He also contacted the Department for Environment, Development and Housing of Réunion Island and asked for permission to participate in the think tank that was set up with the aim of looking into pollution issues.
