Objet
The village of Rabo de Peixe wants to enlarge its harbour to increase the docking capacity for its fishing fleet and develop its fishing activities. This extension may threaten the wave that forms in Rabo de Peixe, putting a stop to any water sports at this site.
État des lieux
Helped in his fight by Surfrider Foundation Azores Chapter, the Keeper has sent several letters to the government alerting for the existence of a world class point break, asking for access to information and to all studies that were carried out concerning this port extension project and also for the participation of all surf organizations in the small scale model tests, which was denied.
Regardless that, and after Surfrider to become the situation public in the media, it was good news that the government reacted answering that they would inform the project technicians and take in consideration the concerns about the wave.
The Keeper has invoked the Aarhus Convention on public access to information. He has suggested the organization of a meeting with the competent authorities, allowing surf organizations to get involved and participate in the processes of elaboration and consultation on the project making sure that specific technical studies where being done to protect the wave. He has also met with local associations.
Meanwhile the government carried on with the public request for potential contractors and the construction process started already. Surfrider Foundation Azores Chapter is following attentively and expectant this process, hoping that all concerns about this wave were truly understood and put into the final solution for the harbor extension.
