Hérault - Sand pollution on Sète beach

Date de dépôt 13/05/2008

Pays : France - Département : Hérault - Ville : Sète -

Objet

According to a testimony (more scaring than the facts disclosed thereafter) the samples of sediments taken during the dredging of Sète port would be ejected on the beach. These sediments would store toxic products (hydrocarbons, heavy metals…) coming from the port and thus polluting the beach.

État des lieux

Surfrider was contacted by a person who witnessed amazing activities in the evening at the port of Sète.

According to his statements, there would be dredging of sludge at night in the port. Then, trucks would dump this sand (certainly polluted) on the beach to enlarge it. We are still waiting for photographs and water and sand samples.

Since then, we attended some meetings on the beaches of this bay and Surfrider found out that there were works at the level of the Lido of Sètes. This renovation program is meant to stop the beach erosion and maintain the environmental, economic and tourist qualities of the site.

This project should end up in the realization of a larger beach (70m more). Indeed, the road will be moved along the railway and the beach will recover its natural function. The road is currently under construction.

Thereafter and to complete this program against erosion, works in the sea with swell attenuators (geotextile fender or pipe) invisible from coastlines should be set up at 500m off the coasts and 5000m3 of sand should be transported to solve the problem of dredging. To date, the origin of the sand is still to be determined.
